  1. The video is is incorrect/incomplete in two major points: orbital decay time and its relation to space junk is not explained, and it looks like it is assumed that Starlink satellites are always illuminated.

    – not every image is smeared, the satellites are not emitting light, just reflecting sunlight. But due to their low orbit, they can only be visible after sunset or before sunrise. Most of the night Starlink sats are not visible, because they are not illuminated.
    – Anything on Low Earth Orbit decays, and eventually re-enters. This means that anything without propulsion deorbits in years which is below 600 km (all Starlink sats are at max 550km to date). Unfortunately about 800 km the decay time is measured in decades, and above 1000 km in centuries. Effectively only below 600 km space is "self cleaning" in human terms. Even if a collision happens below 600 km, very few debris would gain speed to raise orbit, and even if some debris gained altitude, it would still have an elliptical orbit, where the periapsis would stay below 600 km.
    – Most Starlink satellites failed early, before they can raise their orbit to the final height. They would deorbit even faster.
    – SpaceX is developing their sats VERY quickly, so the failure rate is going down quickly. If it is truly remains an issue, they may be able to install an small emergency(independent) engine for deorbiting bad satellites. (the rational is that it is massively less likely that both thrusters and controllers fail at the same time)
    – The space junk potential of Starlink is far less like a sat on 1000 km orbit. But not zero, it would be very interesting to estimate it and compare it to others.

  2. complaining about taking Space pictures with 30k sat flying around is such a joke. given the size of earth and the spacing that the 30K+ satellites will be spread out I'm sure they won't be that big of an issue. That's just picking something to complain about, as well Starlink had also change things up to reduce visibility of the satellites. IMO Space X and Starlink are paving the way to a better future for many people in the world. This will help out in many ways to people without high speed internet.
