New Glenn: Blue Origin's First Orbital Rocket Explained!



SpaceX’s competitor, Blue Origin is gradually moving forward with the development of their heavy lift launch vehicle New Glenn. The Jeff Bezos founded company was established in 2000, two years before SpaceX, but it still yet to reach orbit.

Blue Origin currently have the reusable New Shephard suborbital rocket, which has successfully completed several flights. Blue Origin started the design work on New Glenn in 2012, and the first illustrations of the rocket were made public in 2016. New Glenn will be taller and more powerful than the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. If it launches before the Starship rocket or the NASA’s SLS, then New Glenn will be the most powerful active vehicle.

  1. I don't doubt Bezos will make it happen, but maybe he should take quicker steps😉😁 perhaps I wasn't listening closely, but I think you have the payload of the FH wrong.. From Wikipedia: "Falcon Heavy has more lift capability than any other operational rocket, with a payload of 63,800 kilograms (140,700 lb) to low Earth orbit, 26,700 kilograms (58,860 lb) to Geostationary Transfer Orbit, and 16,800 kg (37,000 lb) to trans-Mars injection."

  3. This video was posted barely a week ago, but gives the appearance of having been made a year ago. The reason is beyond me, but if this video was produced recently then why is New Glenn only compared to the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy with no mention of the Starship? That would be much more practical comparison anyway because of their comparable size and operational goals?

  4. B.O. will NEVER succeed in space, because they are motivated by "commercial reasons" rather than for any worthwhile "science/technology" objectives. The costs and risks will never be commercially viable – ask NASA, they have been doing it for 60 years and still, to this day, require Government assistance!!

    Big booster also reusable if near orbit speed not showed already else expensive way ?
    Small maneuvering engines to see in video already finished ?
    Why docked at engine part for refueling 2. ship ? Heat shield added for earth and mars landing and how to get orbit soeed away in 1% thick mars atmosphere with no parachute in not a wing rocket before touch down also last demo crash to quick falling.
    After landing first time on mars or moon not falling to side with no sidewards pillars like martin lockheed lunar lander on mars maybe in fear of dust blown up last step just falling down and before parachute used etc.
    Oxygene generator directly from CO2 needs 300W solar panel for 7g/h with a 20 cm cube means heavy 2m•2m and much solar panels for 7kg/h. About 7t needed for one backflight with oxygene made on mars etc. ?

    Own first design approach was about thick A320 with 4 wings at front higher outside turnable with engines starting and landing flat also for more lift iff weight same power on normal airport on mars vertical start and landing after transition.
    Also inside uncooled high pressure tanks for CH4+O2 and rocket engines with swiveld in air from cone inlet saving O2.
    Shell out of TiB2+isolation+Ti alloy. Isolation material air distance or nano tube fibre orthogonal isolating parallel heat moving or inert gas foamed stone etc. etc. ?

    Nuke up enclosed frozen water and polar frozen CO2 ice for more heat and pressure first then add photosynthese for real mars terraforming ?

    Better all canceled for big ship that can stand any altitude in air on earth or any planet slowly up and down with 1g+ acceleration after less 1 year near c in space with eternal survival inside not needing anything from outside only a little condensed water for cold fusion energy but high cell tank shield biotop water reserve also for plankton and fish etc.
    with combination of Hg H>H punsh fusion in H2O shooting Hg from crossed double el. mg. counter ring accelerators into water tubes driving ship in shooting direction with room also attached to rotating rings and CO2 tesla turbines with sucking centrifugal compressor pump CO2 backflow cooling of all taking not loosing any heat not to radiate in space efficiency near 100%.
    Inside H2O electrolyse O2 and H2 with CO2 to CH4 and H2O then CH4 used or burned away for CO2/O2 regulation added to photosynthese biotop and sugar & fat synthese, generator etc.

    Better give up this approach with no reentry reusability now for other approaches with space rocket airplane or best new ship with new propulsion type going up and down secure and slowly partly standing long time any altitude any planet with nuclear or fusion energy used for Hg ring accelerator shooting into water tubes propulsion also very worthfull on earth also new CO2 tesla turbine with centrifugal compressor pump
    backflow cooling of all, thermal isolated efficiency near 100%.
    Li-7 Th HTR light also for space. The ship has also eternal survival system for mars or anywhere like earth & sun as system !
