Ep. 238: Starlink Satellite Internet for Your RV | travel camping

Starlink is changing the game for RV travelers and remote workers with affordable high-speed broadband satellite Internet available almost anywhere. In this episode of Grand Adventure, after two years of waiting we share our first experiences with Starlink, including mounting their satellite “Dishy McFlatface” on our RV, running speed tests, and changing our service location. We’re hardly overstating things when we say that this will change everything about how we travel full-time in our RV, to work and play from the road.

Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.

We’re based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you’ll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we’re usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We’ve now transitioned from “long-timing” for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.

We’ll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember…life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

  1. What website do you use to view the satellites, the website that I see in your video of viewing satellites

  2. Thanks for the info. I have my Star Link system, but is Geo-marked to our cabin in Northeastern Washington. I have not been able to travel there this winter. So it is not set up yet. The opportunity to change the address via a smartphone in seconds, changes things big time, as we travel around the country with our RV! After waiting months for our Starlink, our retirement plans have changed, and good internet will be important to stay connected. I will stay tuned!

  3. I’m in Quartzsite now. Tons of RVers! It will be interesting to know your experience with starlink as you travel. I’m waiting for the mobile launch. Thank you!

  4. Marc, great info. I can't wait to get mine. I arrived to Quartzsite today. See you soon. Don

  5. Thanks for the update on the Starlink. We are looking forward to hearing about boondocking link service as you travel. We are starting our journey next month. Thanks

  6. Great video! We're planning our first RV trip this summer, during which I'll work several days (in central WY and eastern ID). I knew I'd likely have to rely on cellular this year, but it's great to know a Peplink router can be integrated into a Starlink solution in the future. Thank you very much for all the information, Marc!

  7. As always a great review. I had heard od starlink but was not sure how it was going to work. Happy trails

  8. Way to much of a hassle…. for now. Can't wait for a full mobil roll out, though. Wont need it for work, but serious gaming and streaming. Great info, though..

  9. Marc,

Thanks for the very thorough coverage of the system and current issues. I can see why there is a waiting list. Things will definitely loosen up later on.

  10. It's gonna be a world changer! Intenet anywhere. Once all the birds are up even the poorest of villages will be connected! And when it's completely mobile it will drive down the cost of cellular. Great review as always!

  11. Excellent video Marc! Question: Does the antenna have to have a 100% unobstructed 'view' of the satellite, or can it work in the woods?

  12. The Uinta Mountains might be seeing some Grand Adventure in the future with the Starlink onboard. Enjoy that Marvelous new toy/tool.

  13. Glad to see you are up and workimg. i got on the waiting list about 2 years ago as well.. Last word was its looking like May or so of this year. Looking forward to it as i currently go from AT&T to Verizon to T-Mobile depending on signal strength. Will liely keep at least 2 cell carriers to start and see how things are after a year

  14. So you are paying $99 a month for (maybe) getting internet when you move from one location to another. I think it needs a few more years to develop. Just my opinion.

  15. I always feel that Elon Musk is the greatest con man of my time. He always tries to talk about something else when his products don't work.
The satellite data connection was expensive, low bandwidth with high latency. There is a satellite kit in a suitcase that the dish can self-position and follow the satellite. Cisco had that product. I'm not sure now.
I'm interested in knowing whether Starlink can replace wired Internet connection or more.

  16. Just joined the Starlink waiting list. Said they will be expanding the coverage in my area( Central FL) by the end of 2022. Hope it doesn't take that long to get it to me.
