The head of SpaceX, Elon Musk, said that the Internet from the Starlink satellite group in 2021 will become fully mobile, which will allow it to be used everywhere – up to car trips.
Blogger Tim Dodd (Everyday Astronaut) asked on Twitter whether Starlink users will always be tied to one place or whether the Internet can be used using a portable device.
“Yes, this year it should be fully mobile so you can move it anywhere or use it while driving a camper van or truck. We need a few more satellite launches to provide full coverage and key software updates, ”Elon Musk wrote.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service is currently in beta testing. CNBC noted that the company has already applied to the authorities to allow Starlink components to work in transportation. In a letter to the FCC from SpaceX Director David Goldman, the company’s satellite internet will expand “the range of broadband capabilities available to moving vehicles throughout the United States, as well as moving ships and aircraft around the world.”
There are now more than 1,100 Starlink satellites in orbit, which were launched by SpaceX. In October 2020, SpaceX began rolling out early beta service to customers in the US, Canada and the UK. The maintenance cost is $ 99 per month. As of the end of January, according to the company, more than 10 thousand subscribers use Starlink satellite Internet.
Currently Starlink customers cannot move equipment from different addresses. The location is entered at checkout. This is due to the fact that the Starlink satellite constellation has not yet been fully built, its capabilities are still limited.
