Blue Origin has been facing its fair share of hiccups and problems along the road to creating a fully reusable spacecraft. Those problems however have slowed down the development of their engines greatly, which is astonishing since the project started in 2011. Logistical and organizational problems starting from 2017 have pushed the timeline of launch from 2019 to 2022. These deep-seated issues have caused losses of confidence in their partners ULA and NASA, resulting in several contracts going directly to their primary competitor SpaceX. In response, CEO Jeff Bezos could only launch unsuccessful complaints. Nevertheless, progress has picked up since late 2021 and they seem to be at the tail end of their success. The departure of the main executive responsible for engine development however, left the company. Whether or not it has thrown a spanner into the works is yet to be seen, but it’s rather clear that Blue Origin cannot compete with SpaceX as an equal yet.
